Rumble! Zap! Pow! by Diane Stortz

A hard cover, cartoon Bible for pre-schoolers is what you will find in Rumble! Zap! Pow!: Mighty Stories of God.

Diane Stortz has included 40 stories from the Bible (20 Old Testament, 20 New Testament) with illustrations by Luke Daab.

Each story is laid out in large "comic book" panels. The illustrations are very colorful with the artwork resembling a kind of anime that has been all the rage for some time.

Each story provides a Mighty Thought along with the Scripture reference.

At the end of each story, you'll discover the Power Words (another Scripture reference) and a fun activity to help bring the story to life for your toddler.

As with the title of this book, some of the fun is in the Batman-style use of action words: "BAM" "THUD" and "Clip-Clop Clip-Clop".

You'll interact with your son/daughter with all the power words in these Bible stories.

Dr. Seuss's ABC: An Amazing Alphabet Book

Who isn't a fan of Dr. Seuss? We aren't talking about the live-action movies but the books full of bizarre rhyming and rhythm.

The good doctor is in full swing with ABC: An Amazing Alphabet Book.

Each letter begins with the same cadence: "Big A, little a, what begins with a?" followed by some goofy wordsmithing: "Aunt Annie's Alligator".

My son enjoys looking at the pictures and hearing me go through the cadence.

My older niece, however, got into the recitation and knew what was coming next so that by the time I was on G, she said with me, "Big G, little g, what begins with g?"

Your kids will enjoy the colorful pictures of the Seussian creatures and giggle at things like the "fiffer feffer feff".

Dr. Seuss all the way for my boy!

Moo Baa La La La by Sandra Boynton

Sandra Boynton is a name you should become familiar with.

Her books are a delight to read. Moo Baa La La La is an "animal sound" book with a funny surprise in the middle.

You'll go through the sounds for such animals as: cows, sheep, pigs, ducks, horses, rhinoceroses, dogs, and cats.

It's funny to hear adults read this book. As they get to the part of what the rhino's say, our brains aren't quite sure if rhinoceroses is the correct word or if we should say something like "rhinocerosi".

And hearing the different types of "snorting and snuffing" brings down the house. Be sure to have grandma and grandpa read this to your little one so you, too, can have a blast.

You won't find any audio or texture features in this book (we'll get to Boynton's Fuzzy Fuzzy Fuzzy in another post) but your child will enjoy growing up with this easy-to-read and echo book.

Farmer Brown and His Little Red Truck by Jean M. Cochran

This is my son's favorite book. He wants us to read it every day - and typically multiple times.

Farmer Brown is driving through his farm in his red truck and along the way, different animals decide to jump in the bed.

Starting with a pig, followed by a cow, sheep, ducks and even frogs the poor truck begins to slow down until it gets stuck in the mud.

The animals jump out and Farmer Brown makes his getaway.

Your child will sit through this book over and over as you read the repetitious story of ducks that quack, sheep clearing a space, and frogs jumping all over the place.

Cochran makes the rhyming and the cadence of the words a joy to read for any toddler.

The illustrations by Daryl Enos pop out of the page and will grab your little one's eyes until Farmer Brown drives away into the horizon.
